What's so wonderful about your paint?
We are certain that you will love our paint once you use it!
Rebel Junk Paint is LOW VOC and low odor! This is a huge factor when you consider the environment, your health, and your family. The paint is real easy to use - there is little to no prep work and it dries quickly! We love how easy it is to create a vintage look. Either with sanding or with wet sanding!
Do I need to wax my piece?
The best results are achieved when you wax your piece after you’ve painted it. Chalk paint is very porous, the wax works as a protective coating so you will be able to enjoy your piece for years to come. Please don’t forget that the wax will need to be re-applied every 6-12 months.
How do I care for my painted furniture?
We recommend cleaning your painted furniture with a lightly damp cloth. You should re-apply the wax finish every 6-12 months.
How much paint will I need?
That’s not an easy question for us to answer as it depends on what you are painting. If you have just a small project, such as a small chair or frames, you could have plenty with a pint. For a dresser or table, you will want at least a pint size. But if you love a certain color, you might as well get a quart sized can?! Then you can do multiple projects and get the best deal! Typically you will cover at least 120 sq ft. with a quart, 60 sq ft. with a pint.
Should I prep my piece?
It was important for us to make this easy to use, without a lot of work. You want to make sure that your piece is clean and dust-free.Very little prep is required with our paint since it adheres to most surfaces without the use of a primer.
If the piece has been painted before, make sure there is no loose paint (unless you don’t mind that the new coat will chip away). It covers well and is a cinch to distress for a vintage look. If the surface is glossy, then we recommend you sand it lightly with 150 grit sandpaper so the paint has something to adhere too. If you prefer a more modern look, use some of our bolder colors and skip the distressing. Because we are impatient...we designed it to dry fast, so most projects can be completed in a days time.
Before you start painting, always make sure the surface is dry and the temperature is approximately between 10°C (50°F) and 30°C (86°F).
How do I create a Shabby Chic look?
Paint the entire piece in the Rebel Junk base coat color you've chosen.
For bare wood to peek through, when the base coat is dry, start sanding off areas that would naturally end up distressed, like places where hands would have grabbed it. Step back a few times to see how it looks to determine how much distressing you prefer. After you have achieved the look you want, wipe the entire piece with a tack cloth.
For a multi color look, you can rub candle wax on the areas where you'd like to see color show through, then apply the second color. (This can also be created by sanding through the top coat.) Paint the second color over the base coat and the candle wax. After the paint dries, rub steel wool over the areas you candle waxed. Wipe off the piece with a tack cloth.
Not sure the distressed look is for you? You can create a modern, glossy finish with Rebel Junk’s paint.
Paint your piece with the Rebel Junk’s Paint color of your choice (when we do modern we like to use bright colors) making sure to use long, even strokes to achieve a smooth finish. Once the first coat is dry, lightly sand all flat surfaces with a fine sanding block. You want an opaque look so do not sand through the paint. Repeat with a second coat of paint.
If you have brush strokes you just can’t live with, pour a little paint into a mason jar and mix in a bit of water to thin it out. Paint the whole piece with the watered down paint to smooth out brush strokes. Lightly sand with a fine sanding block.
For modern pieces, we prefer a gloss finish. Instead of wax, we use a polycrylic. Polycrylic is water-based and it will not yellow. It can also be applied as a finish coat over stain, too, which makes it nice for two-tone pieces. Our Polycrylic requires 2-3 coats. We recommend brushing it on in long even coats and are happy with two coats on most pieces. Make sure to let the Polycrylic dry thoroughly between coats. Also, if you do notice any brush strokes, you can lightly sand with 220-grit sand paper in between finish coats. Congrats, you’ve created a modern, glossy contemporary piece!
